Vitamin C: Sources, Myths, Benefits & Competitor Analysis
A daily dose of Vitamin C is bound to keep many viruses at bay. In skincare, this active ingredient is one of my personal favs for its ability to optimize what I refer to as the BLT for skin health: BRIGHTEN, LIGHTEN, TIGHTEN! In todays skincare market, the use of pure vitamin C is uncommon due to lack of stability; meaning the product once exposed to air will oxidize and turn brown, developing an unpleasant scent. As a result, manufacturers opt for choices such as esters of L-ascorbic acid and the following:
Ascorbyl Palmitate - fat soluble form of ascorbic acid
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate - hydrating and oxygen stable
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphtae - triggers collagen production and water soluble
Kakadu Plum - richest fruit in the world in terms of vitamin C concentration - so much so that it's 75% more concentrated than the orange. The kakadu plum is also anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory.

I see countless number of individuals think they are allergic to vitamin C for this reason when that is not the case. Only a physician or dermatologist can diagnose an allergy.
- It tingles my skin! Lets get this straight- its ok to tingle when you mingle with new actives! Tingling means the active ingredient is doing its job. Stinging or burning causing discomfort is what you need to avoid. If you experience burning or irritation, discontinue use.

In some cases this can be true but studying your products INCI list (ingredient list) will help you make an informed decision on what you are buying! Many of the popular products people are raving about and buying that range from $6-$15 are not only saturated with synthetic ingredients but are not formulated with any anti-aging ingredients. While some brands may be ideal for a younger, more tolerable skin type, a comparison of some of these brands contain formulas with high concentrations of Vitamin C without the addition of calming, anti-inflammatory agents or age support. When you use products that cause inflammation, not only do you accelerate the aging process but you also compromise the skins barrier and overall health.
While most manufacturers have access to the same ingredients - they do not formulate with the same quality or grade of ingredients. Food for thought!
